Explore the World with Communication and Media!
There are many opportunities available to students who want to study abroad! Communication and Media majors can use up to 10 (ten) upper-level credits transferred from international or domestic institutions toward the Additional Advanced COMM credit requirement, as long as they have been approved by the department faculty advisor.
Before investing time and money in a program, please confirm that the content of the courses you intend to take is approved as a substantive match to the departmental curriculum by our faculty advisor.

Will my courses count? Review our Pre-Approved Lists per Destination:
If you are planning to study abroad and would like courses to count towards the Communication & Media major, please follow these steps:
Before you leave:
1. Review the Study Abroad Guide, linked here.
2. Review the pre-approved course lists above.
3. Choose your program.
4. Determine whether or not the program's classes are currently on one of the approved lists. If it doesn't appear on one of the lists, submit your desired coursework through our Study Abroad Course Approval Form.
5. If the classes are approved, retain a copy of your approval email(s) for reference.
While you are away:
1. Enroll in and complete your coursework.
2. If you are on a non-U-M program, after you've received your grades, request that your transcripts are sent from your visiting school to the U-M Office of Admissions.
When you return:
1. Monitor your U-M transcript. Courses taken through a U-M program may take several weeks to appear individually on your transcript. Courses taken through a non-U-M program may also take several weeks to appear, after you've requested the transcript be sent.
2. Once you notice the classes appear on your U-M transcript, reach out to commadvisor@umich.edu to request that they be directed to the major. Include the subject, number, and title of each course.
3. Once notified, the advisor will direct the course(s) to the major via Exception. This process may take 2-3 weeks. Once entered, the classes will appear on your LSA Audit Checklist in the Additional Advanced COMM credit line within the major.
