Summer Programs

Annenberg-Oxford Media Policy Summer Institute

Each summer the Department sponsors 1-2 students to participate in the Annenberg-Oxford Summer Institute, offered through the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication at Oxford University (UK).

The Annenberg-Oxford Media Policy Summer Institute (An-Ox), held annually since 2004, brings together young scholars and regulators from around the world to discuss important recent trends in technology and its influence on information policy.

The objective of the program is to help prepare, motivate, encourage, and support students and practitioners who aspire to pursue a career in a media-related field, may it be in academia, business, or in policy-related fields. Applications are welcomed from students and practitioners working in communications, media, law, policy, regulation, and technology.

Housing, tuition, air fare (to and from Detroit Metro Airport), and a $750 stipend is provided by the Department to those students accepted into An-Ox.

COMPASS Washington, DC Summer Fellowship Program

Each summer the Department sponsors one student to participate in the COMPASS Summer Fellowship Program, organized in collaboration with the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, the Department of Communication and Media at the University of Michigan, and the Moody College of Communication at the University of Texas.

The summer fellowship program is designed to provide Ph.D. students in Communication and Media Studies with hands on experience in the development and implementation of communication policy. Fellows intern (8-10 weeks from early-June through early-August) in DC-based government offices or agencies, think tanks, political party or advocacy organizations, or other communication-related public or private sector institutions. All Fellows participate in an orientation prior to beginning their fellowship, and a follow-up debriefing, both to take place in Washington, DC. Fellows are also required to attend a weekly seminar on media policy co-taught by Annenberg@Penn professor Victor Pickard and former Chief Diversity Officer for the FCC and current Clinical Professor at Annenberg@USC Mark Lloyd, for which Ph.D. course credit may be granted. Additional opportunities for Fellows to attend other scholarly, applied and social events will also be provided.

Fellowships include assistance in locating an appropriate placement with a host institution, a stipend ($5,000), support for housing expenses in DC ($2,000), and up to $500 in airfare.

Summer Training at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor Campus

Students are also provided the opportunity to participate in summer training programs held on campus at the University of Michigan to complete their advanced methods course requirement and enhance their
methodological approaches.

The Department of Communication and Media funds enrollment in the Inter-university Consortium for
Political and Social Research (ICPSR) Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research
offering programming in research design, statistics, data analysis, and social science methodology. The ICPSR Summer Program offers two four-week course sessions as well as numerous 3- to 5-day workshops on a variety of statistical topics and substantive issues.

The Mission of the Summer Program:

  • To offer instruction for the primary development and "upgrading" of quantitative skills by college and university faculty and by nonacademic research scholars
  • To extend the scope and depth of analytic skills for graduate participants, college and university faculty, and research scientists from the public sector
  • To furnish training for those individuals who expect to become practicing social methodologists
  • To provide opportunities for social scientists to study those methodologies that have special bearing on specific substantive issues
  • To create an environment that facilitates an exchange of ideas related to the development of methodologies on the frontier of social research

Funding is also available for enrollment in the Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques at the Survey Research Center (SRC). The Summer Institute strives to provide rigorous and high quality graduate training in all phases of survey research. The program teaches state-of-the art practice and theory in the design, implementation, and analysis of surveys.  Courses are offered in two four-week sessions and in one and three week blocks.

The Survey Research Center was established to interact effectively with all parts of the University and to perform five major functions:

  • Provide a well-trained staff and research capability for conducting surveys on economic and social problems
  • Conduct methodological research for the improvement and development of survey procedures
  • Help in the integration of the social sciences by providing facilities for interdisciplinary research on social problems
  • Foster theoretical advancement in the social sciences based on new data from interdisciplinary research
  • Provide graduate training in all phases of survey methodology
