Drama (Major)

Drama Students, RCHUMS 281 WN22

The Drama Major is open to ALL LSA Students.

The Drama Program in the Residential College is designed for theatremakers who seek to learn their craft holistically and connect their arts practice to important issues facing our society. We define the term “theatremaking” as the practice and study of all aspects of the art form, including performance, design, playwriting, and scholarship, not as distinct disciplines but as a single collaborative practice in service to drama that is grassroots, community-engaged, independent, and, above all, committed to social change.

Building on community-engaged disciplines and programs across the College, the Drama Program is committed to exploring what theatre can do in our society. Rather than investing in what the field is or has been, we are motivated to ask what it might become in, and for, the future. Students engage with these questions in courses that combine theory with practice and that often culminate in public performances. In addition, students have more formal opportunities to present their work – as existing scripts, adaptations, or completely original works – for the University, the local community, and beyond. This training augments and amplifies the community-engaged work housed at the Residential College, especially Telling It, Prison Creative Arts Project, and Shakespeare in the Arb.
