What Makes the RC Different?

Choosing the Residential College means choosing a different way to experience the University of Michigan.

While RC students enjoy all the opportunities available through one of the nation's leading public research universities, they also become part of a smaller academic community where learning is personal, collaborative, and rooted in close relationships with faculty and fellow students.

A Small Liberal Arts College Within Michigan

The RC was founded on the belief that students learn best when they are active participants in their education. Small classes, discussion-based teaching, interdisciplinary inquiry, and individualized advising create an environment where students are encouraged to ask questions, take intellectual risks, and develop their own perspectives.

Faculty know their students by name, mentor them beyond graduation requirements, and often work alongside them on research, creative projects, and community initiatives.

Learning That Extends Beyond the Classroom

The Residential College believes that education should not be confined to a classroom.

Students participate in community-engaged learning, creative practice, internships, performances, research, and partnerships throughout Southeast Michigan and beyond. Whether tutoring English learners, collaborating with incarcerated artists, spending a semester in Detroit, or performing Shakespeare outdoors, students apply what they learn while contributing to their communities.

Immersive Language Learning

Language study is a defining feature of the RC experience. Every student completes an intensive language requirement designed to develop cultural understanding alongside linguistic proficiency.

The RC's language programs emphasize communication, immersion, and meaningful engagement with cultures around the world.

A Community That Lasts

For many students, the Residential College becomes more than an academic program - it becomes home.

Living together in East Quad, participating in traditions, joining student organizations, and learning alongside the same classmates over four years creates a strong sense of belonging that continues long after graduation. Alumni frequently describe the relationships they formed in the RC as one of the most meaningful parts of their Michigan experience.

The Residential College offers students the opportunity to build a university education that is academically rigorous, personally meaningful, and deeply connected to the communities around them.
