No seat is a bad seat at the Keene! The Keene Theater is a small, intimate 150-seat blackbox theater in East Quadrangle that's part of the Residential College. The Keene is a performance venue and multipurpose space that hosts any type of event that may take place on a stage. The space primarily supports RC courses, programs, and student organizations.
The Keene hosts events organized by the RC Drama program, the RC Music program, and the wider RC community. From RC Drama Capstones to RC Music Honors Theses, theatrical productions, concert series, class performances, musicals, plays, lectures, conferences, and more, there's almost no type of event the Keene hasn't hosted!
While many of our shows happen for one night and one night only, we have numerous events that take place in the Keene on a semesterly or yearly basis.
At the end of every semester, the RC Drama program and RC Music program each host a wide array of end-of-term performances in December and in April. From Shakespeare to Electronic Music, the end of the semester at the Keene is always packed with back-to-back shows from dozens of RC courses. Read more about our courses here.
In addition to end-of-term performances, the Keene hosts RC Drama Capstone Productions each year, as well as RC Music Honors Thesis performances. Interested in staging a performance in the Keene? Read more about how to get involved here.
The RC Players, officially an RC forum / student organization, host five recurring shows each semester.
Red Eye – a play that is written, rehearsed, and put to the stage over the course of just 1 day. The RC Players stay up all night in the theater crafting a brand new show, culminating in a one-time public performance the at the end of 24 hours in the theater.
Evening of Scenes – a collection of short scenes and excerpts of larger plays.
Rocky Horror Shadowcast (Fall only) – A screening and live performance of the famous Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Spring Shadowcast Show (Winter only) – A performance where actors take the stage in front of a film, mimicking the on-screen action while onstage.
Two Full Length Productions – The Players' production schedule culminates in two fully staged productions which are brand new from semester to semester.
In addition to the above events, the RC hosts the annual Robertson
Lecture in the Keene Theater. Read more about the Robertson lecture

RC Convocation is held in the Keene Theater, while RC Graduation is typically held in the Lydia Mendelssohn Theater.
The Keene Theater, formerly the East Quad Auditorium, has a rich history of decades of culture and student life. The area where the Keene currently stands used to be a larger area bustling with student life, called the Halfway Inn, or colloquially, "The Halfass." The Halfass featured a student-run diner and was connected to the venue and stage in the East Quad Auditorium.
The Halfway Inn was a hub of autonomous student activity in East Quad. A student run café and performance venue, it embodied the grass-roots student-run character of the Residential College and left a deep impression on generations of East Quad residents. Hundreds of student shows and touring bands visited the Halfway Inn, generating a rich cultural history with the community during this time.
