Film Double Feature: "The City Dark"

Sunday, August 7, 2011
12:00 AM
Gates Lecture Hall, University of Michigan Biological Station on Douglas Lake, 9133 Biological Road, Pellston.

This is part of our 2011 Environmental Film Series. It is free and open to the public. Emmet County Headlands International Dark Sky Park is co-sponsoring this event.

Filmmaker Ian Cheney ("King Corn," "The Greening of Southie") debuts his new feature documentary, "The City Dark" (unrated, 84 minutes). The film is Cheney's attempt to answer the question, "Do we need the stars?" Exploring the threat of killer asteroids in Hawaii, tracking hatching turtles along the Florida coast, and rescuing injured birds on Chicago streets, Cheney unravels the myriad implications of a globe glittering with lights. Featuring stunning astrophotography and a cast of eclectic scientists, philosophers, historians and lighting designers, "The City Dark" is the definitive story of light pollution and the disappearing stars. We will have Q&A with Director Ian Cheney immediately following the film. At 4:30 in the afternoon we present the first half of this double feature: "Parasites: A User's Guide" (27 minutes, unrated) with its director, Sharon Shattuck.
