What you can complete at Alpena for the Economics major.

Prerequisties

  • Two Economics courses
  • ECN 231: Economics (Micro) transfers as ECON 101: Principle Econ I for 3 credits
  • ECN 232: Economics (Macro) transfers as ECON 102: Principle Econ II for 3 credits
  • Calculus
  • There is not a course that transfers as MATH 115 so you have two options.
  • Option 1: If you take both MTH 131 and MTH 132 you will receive credit for MATH 116: Calculus II which will fulfill the calculus prerequisite. Option 1 will require 8 credits of calculus at Alpena.
  • Option 2: Take MATH 115 after you transfer. Requires no credits for calculus at Alpena but you should take math to prepare to complete calculus after transferring.

What you will have to complete after you transfer to complete the Economics major.

30 or 34 credits to include the following:

  • Prerequisites: MATH 115: Calculus I if you do not complete the MTH 131 and MTH 132 combination at Alpena.
  • Core Economic Theory: 2 courses
  • Core Statistics and Econometrics: 2 courses
  • Electives: 15 credits

Sample 2-year Completion Pathway

  • Semester 2: 401 (4 credits), 300 level elective (3 credits)

Completing General Degree Requirements as an Economics major.

  • In addition to completing the requirements for the Economics major you will need to complete a total of 120 credits and the General Degree Requirements. Transfer credit can count for all General Degree Requirements.
  • Courses that transfer with the U-M subject ECON cannot be used for Area Distribution for Economics majors.  Therefore, Alpena’s ECN 225, 227, 231, 232 cannot be used to fulfill social science distribution as they are listed on the General Degree Requirement Transfer Guide
  • Quantitative Reasoning Requirement (QR). Multiple courses required for the Economics major will fulfill QR so you do not plan to complete anything outside of the major for this requirement.
