LSA Technology Services has partnered with U-M Information Technology Services to offer up to 100 Terabytes of Turbo Research Storage, and unlimited Data Den Research Archive storage to LSA researchers without cost to the individual or department.
Service Status: Active

Overview

LSA Technology Services has partnered with U-M Information Technology Services (ITS) to offer active and archival storage for research data at no cost with the new LSA Research Storage Funding Model.

This program has been enabled by generous support from the UM Provost's office in the spring of 2021, which created the University of Michigan Research Computing Package (UMRCP).   We have moved to a new model that provides researchers with up to 100TB of research storage and unlimited archival storage, both at no cost either to the researcher or to the department.

Starting July 1, 2023, additional storage can be purchased using a valid University shortcode at the current Advanced Research Computing (ARC) rate: https://arc.umich.edu/turbo/.

LSA Research Storage Offerings

The standard offering is based on the ARC Turbo Research Storage and the ARC Data Den Research Archive services.  Turbo is a high-speed storage solution able to support fast networking and the processing of large data sets on the Great Lakes, Lighthouse and/or Armis clusters.  Data Den is an archival solution meant for the long-term storage of very large datasets that are not accessed often.  These storage offerings are designed to complement Google and DropBox at U-M. While those latter two solutions are meant for lower volumes of data, this offering is meant for big data that those services simply cannot accommodate.

Eligibility

UMRCP storage is available for:

  • regular tenure-track and tenured faculty
  • research scientists working as Principal Investigators (PI) on funded grants
  • emeritus faculty
  • lecturers
  • post-docs and graduate students with their own grants
  • guest faculty if they are here for at least one year
  • PhD students in programs where they do not have an advisor, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Other graduate students, as well as post-docs without their own grants will normally need to be added to an advisor's or PI's resources.  If graduate students or others have departmental or other funding for their own research, separate from that of their advisor or PI, they may purchase research storage, but it will not be eligible for the UMRCP.

Signing Up and Making Volume Changes

You can request your initial storage account using the UMRCP request form.

LSA will pay for up to 90TB above the 10TB offered by the UMRCP, and for Data Den storage without pre-specified limits. Please request to increase your storage in line with your current requirements to reduce costs to LSA.  Efficient use of Turbo across LSA will help to ensure that the College can continue to provide this valuable service to our researchers.

If you would like to increase the size of your research shares or find out more about larger shares please contact LSATechnologyServices@umich.edu. As part of responding to requests to increase storage volumes, we would like to consult with you on data management for your current and future storage requirements.

If you have applied using the form and have been told you are not eligible for the UMRCP, you may still purchase research storage if you have funding through a University shortcode. Please write to arc-support@umich.edu to request a research storage volume.

Features

The new LSA Research Storage Funding Model offers researchers up to 100 TB of Turbo Research Storage (that is, an additional 90 TB over and above the 10 TB offered by the UM Research Computing Package, or UMRCP) and unlimited Data Den Research Archive Storage.  Either CIFS/Multiprotocol (used primarily by Windows and most Macs) or NFSv4 storage (used primarily by Linux and some Macs) is available.

Turbo has snapshots enabled, which allows you to retrieve accidentally deleted files for up to 7 days (one week). An additional bi-weekly snapshot may also be requested.

Environment CIFS (Common Internet File System) NFS (Network File System)
Cost above 100TB Current rate from ARC: https://arc.umich.edu/turbo/ Current rate from ARC: https://arc.umich.edu/turbo/
Backups 7-day standard snapshot policy. An additional bi-weekly snapshot may be requested. 7-day standard snapshot policy. An additional bi-weekly snapshot may be requested.
Supported Platforms Windows, Mac OS and Linux Primarily Linux, MacOS. Windows 7+ is supported in limited specific configurations
Mountable on the Great Lakes/ Armis clusters? Not as CIFS, only as multiprotocol volume Yes
Sensitive Data Storage Certain types of sensitive data are permitted. Please check the Sensitive Data Guide for clarification. Certain types of sensitive data are permitted if you are using NFSv4+ Kerberos. Otherwise, no sensitive data are permitted.

LSA Data Migration Project

LSA Technology Services is currently moving its researchers away from the use of MiStorage. Research data is now to be stored in Turbo volumes which are available under the UMRCP. If a researcher has a current MiStorage volume the LSA Technology Services HPC and Storage team will work with them to help migrate the data out of MiStorage and into Turbo.

If you have not applied to the UMRCP to have a Turbo volume created for your data please visit the UMRCP request form.

If you have an existing Turbo volume and have questions about moving your data out of MiStorage or have an existing MiStorage volume but were deemed ineligible for the UMRCP please contact the LSATS HPC and Storage team to get assistance at lsats-rci-research-storage@umich.edu

Where can the service be used?

The service is available both on and off campus. Standard access to CIFS space requires the use of the campus VPN. Off-campus access to NFS space requires access to the system the NFS space is mounted on. This may or may not require the use of the VPN.  NFS and multi-protocol volumes are also available via Globus both on and off campus.

Before using this service

Q: Who should I contact for help?
A: Please contact the LSA Technology Services Desk.

Q: How do I see and control my storage?
A: You can look at the storage allocation and usage through the ARC Resource Management Portal: https://portal.arc.umich.edu. You can also find administrative information about your storage such as mount paths and users in the portal.

Q: How do I connect to my storage?
A for CIFS: If you are a Windows or Mac user, the detailed instructions can be found in the email that you received with the path to your storage.  Please reach out to your local IT unit support for assistance.

A for NFS: Your local desktop support team should contact you with the initial setup and ensure that you can connect to your storage.

If you do not know the path to your storage, please contact the LSA Technology Services IT Service Desk.

Q: How can I best transfer data between this storage and other locations?
A: Globus is the preferred way to transfer data to and from your storage.  Globus provides scalable, secure, high-speed, reliable, and persistent data transfer that can be easily configured and automated.  You can share subsets of your data securely with individual colleagues.  More information can be found at https://arc.umich.edu/globus/ .

Q: Can I connect a client to my storage from off campus?
A for CIFS: You can access your storage space off-campus if you first connect to the VPN. Instructions for installing and accessing the VPN can be found here. Then you should be able to access the share via the link sent to your email address upon provisioning.

A for NFS: Access to the storage space is the same as access to the computer that you have mounted your storage on. If you can access your computer that has mounted NFS via the VPN or the ITS login service, you can access your files.

Q: Can I access my storage over the web, via sftp, or on my mobile device?
A: Presently, read-only web access is available for both CIFS via https://dfs.lsa.umich.edu/research/ and NFS by request to LSATechnologyServices@umich.edu. SFTP is available for CIFS space through sftp.m.storage.umich.edu, but is unavailable for NFS. Mobile access is presently not supported beyond these mechanisms.

If you are interested in further access mechanisms please let us know at LSATechnologyServices@umich.edu.

Q. Are there other storage options available?
A. The ITS Data Storage Finder can help you find other storage solutions to meet your needs.

Requesting Service

You must request your initial UMRCP allocation through https://portal.arc.umich.edu.  If you have questions about your storage needs, please contact the LSATS HPC and Storage team at lsats-rci-research-storage@umich.edu .  For all other questions, please contact the LSA Technology Services IT Service Desk.
