Pre-Proposal Summary
Data generated from the [Project Name] initiative will be securely stored using the University of Michigan’s centralized systems: Turbo for active storage and Data Den for inactive data that is set aside for future active computing or long-term retention to meet grant and policy requirements. Both are part of the U-M Research Computing Package (UMRCP) and developed by the Advanced Research Computing (ARC) team to meet grant agency standards.
The University of Michigan manages two data centers where these systems reside. The Modular Data Center (MDC), a 1 MW, 1,000-square-foot facility, offers 24 KW per rack with efficient ambient air cooling and conditioned backup power and the Michigan Academic Computing Center (MACC), a 2 MW leased facility promoting research collaboration with high-speed connections and backup power. Both centers connect to the U-M research backbone via redundant high-speed links.
The research backbone provides 400Gbps redundant connections, eliminating single failure points while connecting key resources. Managed by the Information and Technology Services (ITS) team, the network offers multiple paths to the commodity internet with over 100 Gbps capacity and a dedicated 100 Gbps link to research networks Internet2 and MiLR.
Turbo, located in MACC, delivers secure, reliable, high-capacity network storage for U-M researchers. It supports various file types and sizes, offering optional replication and backup snapshots for data protection. Data Den acts as a cost-effective, disk-caching, tape-backed, durable archival system for long-term research objects (data) retention.
Researchers must include documentation and metadata during data deposit to facilitate findability and re-usage. The Globus data transfer system manages efficient movement of data, enhancing interoperability among Turbo, Data Den, researchers, and institutions. Research data or objects remain accessible for a minimum of seven years unless stated otherwise by the funder, with additional preservation time assessed as needed.
Additional tools for researchers include MiDatabase and MiServer. MiDatabase is a centrally managed, on-premise cloud database service reducing management costs and risks. It supports Microsoft SQL, MySQL, and Oracle with scalable capacity and focuses on data security and availability. MiServer is a U-M virtual server environment offering user-managed OS administration or a managed OS for application-focused use. The implementation of virtualization is designed with extensive security controls ensuring a secure, isolated, HIPAA compliant environment.
