What is Process Feedback?
AI detectors are unreliable and don't help students learn. Process Feedback takes a different approach: instead of guessing, just look at what actually happened. As students write, it captures their editing time, revision patterns, copy-paste events, and AI usage. The result? A clear picture of how the work was created along with evidence that can start honest conversations about learning.
This approach shifts the conversation from 'Did you cheat?' to 'How did you learn?' Students can demonstrate their effort transparently. Teachers can identify who needs help before deadlines, not after. And when AI is involved, it reveals exactly when and how. This turns fear into an opportunity to teach responsible use.

Process Feedback is a pedagogical alternative to plagiarism or AI-detection tools. It offers a constructive way to promote academic integrity. Instead of flagging content after submission, It helps teachers and students reflect on the writing process itself. It supports learning, transparency, and instructional dialogue rather than enforcement.It is student-centered since students are in control of their own data
There are two ways to use Process Feedback (PF)
Method 1 - Extension for Online Editors:
A Google Docs browser extension that students add to their interface. The extension allows downloads of the edit history of a Google Docs document from Google and turns the edit history data into a writing process report. At any point while writing, students can generate a Writing Process Report that summarizes how their work developed over time.
A free PF browser extension for Canvas helps increase student engagement and encourages students to communicate think critically. With this method, there are some requirements:
Method 2 - A Separate Online Editor:
The instructor sets up an assignment and then shares as a link with students. The Process Feedback online editor is an online writing space for assignments where the writing process is being recorded as it is typed. As students write, the editor can generate a "writing process report" that they can review themselves or share with others for reflection, feedback, or discussion. Teachers decide how (or whether) to use the writing process report for feedback, discussion, or assessment. Process Feedback works by capturing background data that is automatically generated in GDocs and visualizes it so that users (students) can view the data in context.
About The Editor for Writing-Based Assignments
The online editor is a platform that supports keyboard entry in GDocs for student submissions. It displays editing time, revision effort, and paste events.
