About
Jiyeon (pronounced jee-yawn) Lee is a PhD student in Sociology at the University of Michigan. Broadly interested in the intersection of gender and the state, Jiyeon’s work has centered on how gendered ideals of citizenship shape access to rights and resources, particularly within marriage and fertility-declining states. Her recent work examines how the “politics of loneliness” unfolds in these contexts, focusing on the varying forms and processes of state intervention that construct loneliness as a social pathology. Her research to date has primarily engaged with scholarly conversations in political sociology, the sociology of gender, and the sociology of welfare states.
Prior to joining Michigan, she received academic training in sociology under the guidance of Dr. Jocelyn Viterna and Dr. Paul Chang among others. She also brings professional experience as a data analyst in the consulting industry in Japan, before resuming her academic career.
