Scholarship FAQ

Your award will be credited to your account through Wolverine Access. If your account is already fully covered by financial aid (grants, scholarships, loans), the award may reduce the balance of your loans or other aid. Occasionally, awards are credited without proper adjustments, resulting in an improper check or deposit to the student. If this happens, you may be asked by Student Financial Services to return the full amount.

Financial assistance from all sources during the academic year (September through August) factors into the ongoing review of your financial aid eligibility now and in the future. This includes periods when you may not be actively enrolled in courses, and includes the spring/summer term following graduation. If your total financial aid, including any new offer, exceeds your eligibility for financial assistance this academic year, your aid may be limited in a future term or reduced from previously received assistance. You can learn more about financial aid terms and conditions on the Office of Financial Aid's website. Important: If this new funding reduces other aid that you receive, we encourage you to reach out directly to the Office of Financial Aid to explore their budget evaluation process and your options to restore reduced funding.

This depends on the scholarship; your offer letter will include information about renewal.

There is no minimum GPA requirement; however, we expect a 3.5 GPA in mathematics courses if you're receiving a merit scholarship. The scholarship committee will review progress each term. If at any time there are circumstances affecting your academic performance, you should speak with an advisor in order to discuss the situation. The scholarship committee realizes that college life can be stressful, and that this stress sometimes manifests itself in grades which do not accurately reflect the capability of the student. An occasional "less than stellar" grade is nothing to worry about; a consistent pattern of them is.

No. Your scholarship is a fixed amount. If you find yourself in need of additional financial assistance, you should contact LSA Scholarships (lsascholarships@umich.edu) and/or the Office of Financial Aid (financial.aid@umich.edu). You could also discuss your situation with math’s scholarship coordinator (math-undergrad-office@umich.edu) or apply for an emergency scholarship.

As long as you are also majoring in Mathematics, that is fine. You must major in Mathematics in order to retain your scholarship. You are welcome to pursue a concurrent major in any subject you choose.

You must remain enrolled in LSA in order to major in Mathematics, and thus retain your scholarship. It is possible to pursue concurrent degrees in LSA and other U-M colleges (including Engineering).
