A group of Linguistics faculty and graduate students specializing in phonetics and phonology traveled to Melbourne, Australia, in August to participate in the 19th International Congress of Phonetic Sciences (ICPhS).

The ICPhS conference is held once every four years. The theme for ICPhS 2019 was “Endangered Languages, and Major Language Varieties.”

Attending from the department were graduate students Dominique Bouavichith, Ian Calloway, Justin Craft, Tamarae Hildebrandt, Jiseung Kim, and Rachel Weissler, each of whom presented research. Also attending were professor Pam Beddor, professor Andries Coetzee, and postdoctoral research fellow Stephen Tobin.

Among the highlights at ICPhS 2019, former U-M Linguistics undergraduate student Sarah Harper, now pursuing doctoral studies in Linguistics at USC, was awarded the Best Student Paper Award.
