This summer, Ph.D. student Sophia Eakins received a prestigious award from the Linguistics Society of America (LSA) to fund her participation at the bi-annual LSA Summer Institute. The General Institute Fellowship was awarded to only 12 institute attendees who have demonstrated great scholarship in their graduate studies.
Sophia is currently a 4th year Ph.D. student in Linguistics and her research interests lie in variation and change within Creole languages from a synchronic perspective, particularly with regards to phonetic and phonological inventories. Currently, Sophia is working with the Cabo Verdean diaspora in New England.
