PhD candidate Moira Saltzman and Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) mentees Catherine Jiang, Rishma Balakrishnan, and Siyeon Park presented a paper at the 7th International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation, held virtually March 4-7, hosted by the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
Their talk was titled "Jejueo talking dictionary: A collaborative online database for language revitalization."
The talk is based on fieldwork conducted by Moira in Jeju, South Korea, and Osaka, Japan, from 2014 through 2020. The UROP mentor and mentee team is using Jejueo data to develop both a web-based talking dictionary and Android application to serve as a free multimedia repository of Jejueo speech. The design centers on accommodating diverse user communities such as native speakers, language-learners and the scientific community.
