The Linguistics Department welcomed three talented and enthusiastic fellows to the department for a social gathering on June 9 as part of the Michigan Humanities Emerging Research Scholars Program (MICHHERS) program.
Simón Campos, Daniel Morales, and Cay Bappe visited with Linguistics faculty and students as part of their two-week MICHHERS experience. The MICHHERS program is designed to encourage students from diverse cultural, economic, geographic, and ethnic backgrounds to consider pursuing a doctoral degree in the humanities at the University of Michigan.
Simón is expecting to complete his MA thesis at University of Puerto Rico- Río Piedras in summer 2022. (MICHHERS faculty mentor is Acrisio Pires.)
Daniel received their MA this year from California State University-Fullerton in April 2022. (MICHHERS faculty mentor is Jon Brennan.)
Cay recently completed their first year of the MA at University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill. (MICHHERS faculty mentor is Teresa Satterfield.)
Linguistics graduate student Cecilia Solís-Barroso (who participated in MICHHERS in 2019) served as the student mentor for the fellows. She says that during the MICHHERS program, students work one-on-one with a Linguistics faculty member to develop a research project. They also attend Linguistics seminars as well as workshops on topics such as applying to graduate school and general professional development.
