Congratulations to Linguistics PhD candidate Chia-Wen Lo, who was awarded one of five Barbour Scholarships from the University of Michigan for the 2020-2021 academic year.
The Barbour Scholarship funds exceptional female graduate students from Asia and the Middle-East.
Chia-Wen (Taiwan) studies how mental structures and computations are used in understanding words and sentences. Her dissertation investigates the functional interpretation of neural oscillations in carrying out composition, especially in the low-frequency delta oscillations (0.5-4 Hz), which have been recently correlated with the processing of hierarchical structures.

Up to eight Barbour Scholars are chosen throughout the university each year on the basis of potential for contribution to their home country as well as academic record, statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, and timely progress toward the degree.
Congratulations, Chia-Wen!
