Linguistics PhD student Andrew McInnerney will present “Two strategies for PP-fronting from certain island environments in English” at the 58th Chicago Linguistic Society Conference, April 22-24. Andrew’s presentation takes place on Saturday, April 23.
Presentation Summary
I argue that some apparent exceptions to island constraints are really only apparent. Specifically, I argue that what looks like pied-piping of prepositional phrases out of subjects (normally islands) is better analyzed without extraction from subjects. One way to derive such sentences is via base generation of the PP. Another way is to first extrapose the PP to the right, and then pied-pipe from there.
