The PACE team meeting with students at Huston-Tillotson University in Austin.

U-M Linguistics PhD Student Kendall Lowe, a member of Rackham’s Partnerships for Access, Community, and Excellence (PACE) team, recently traveled to Texas to promote higher education opportunities. From January 12-17, Kendall and the PACE team visited eight minority-serving institutions in San Antonio, Houston, and Austin. Their goal was to encourage students to apply for the Michigan Humanities Emerging Research Scholars (MICHHERS) program and other Rackham summer initiatives.

The MICHHERS program at the University of Michigan offers a 2-week academic experience for undergraduate or MA students from diverse backgrounds who are interested in pursuing a PhD at Michigan, including in Linguistics. Participants receive a $1,000 stipend, along with covered travel, lodging, and meals. During the MICCHERS program, participants interact with faculty and PhD students, work on a research project with a U-M faculty mentor, attend research seminars, and have application workshops.

The outreach was met with enthusiasm, highlighting the program's potential to draw diverse talents to the University of Michigan. Interested students should apply by February 10, 2025. More details are available at rackham.umich.edu/michhers or by emailing rackmichhers@umich.edu.
