Explore Conservation Research

Conservator Suzanne Davis views colorful textiles from Karanis.

Kelsey Museum conservators work in both the museum’s laboratory and on several of its field sites. In both settings, they conduct research centered on a few main questions: What is causing or has caused an object or site to deteriorate, and how can the damage be stopped or slowed? How were ancient objects produced, and what can we learn about the materials, technology, and craft practices used by the people who made them?

Conservators use a variety of research methods, from experimentation and observation to chemical and physical analysis.
