Many organizations that offer internships require students to receive academic credit for their work (the students are not hired as regular employees of the company), and the English department is pleased to offer students English 321-Internship for one credit (repeatable for up to four credits). Credit can be earned for both paid and unpaid internship experiences. The stipulations and requirements are as follows:
- You must be a declared English major or minor to receive internship credit from our department.
- English majors will receive one academic credit per approved internship experience, not to exceed a total of four credits.
- English minors will receive one academic credit of an approved internship experience,.
- English 321 counts as elective credit; it cannot be used to fulfill the department's core major requirements.
- You must apply for the internship at least three weeks before beginning your internship.
- For students working an internship in the spring and/or summer months, you may register for credit in the fall semester.
Once you secure your internship position, please complete this google form and email Briahna Anders to be considered for credit.
After Completion of an Internship Experience, students are required to submit:
- A 3 page summary of the experience describing the skills learned, how it relates to an English major or minor and how the internship relates to future career aspirations.
- A letter of recommendation from the internship supervisor
- 2-3 work samples
- A photo and a paragraph describing the internship experience and what you learned from it OR a video describing the internship experience and what you gained from it. These submissions will be added to our website as student testimonials.
Why only 1 Credit per Internship Experience?
Credit is earned for the completion of the coursework completed alongside the internship not for the specific internship experience. Departments have no way to assume oversight or control over an internship and cannot assess if an internship meets any specific learning objectives or if an internship represents an equivalent to a college course.
