Giving to English

The Department of English Language and Literature serves as an extraordinary center of creativity, inquiry, and discovery with a proud tradition of leadership in scholarship and teaching. Our mission as educators is to enable students to become the finest readers and writers of literary texts. These texts depict humans in their infinite variety; through them, we equip our students to read the world and write the future with subtlety, acumen, and precision. Your gifts will enable us to advance our position as one of the top English departments in the country.

Your Gifts at Work

“I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this without my English degree, and the skills I picked up at Michigan allowed me to learn on the fly.” —Jackson Howard (2016) on his Farrar, Straus and Giroux (FSG) Internship, made possible by the Student Career Development Fund

"Of everything I got out of the University of Michigan — and trust me, I got a lot — the experience that impacted me most will always be the New England Literature Program.” —Sofia Lynch, NELP 2018

“Bear River is the first place I ever had the courage to declare myself a writer and a poet.” —Claire Weiner

Giving Opportunities

English Language and Literature Strategic Fund - 308213

Expendable, undesignated gifts are extraordinarily important to the continuing success and growth of the department. Contributions of any size to the English Strategic Fund make it possible to meet unexpected needs and challenges, and might provide seed funding for faculty projects, sponsorship of distinguished international visitors, participation in international conferences highlighting the department’s scholarship, or innovative curriculum development.

English Student Career Development Fund - 328709

This fund makes it possible for students to launch publishing careers, sail the Great Lakes as communications interns, turn a passion for creative writing into a vocation, explore the legal profession, break into journalism — and more! Your generosity helps students complement their studies in English with hands-on experience that will benefit them for years to come.
