Associate Professor Josh Pasek notes changes in political communication in Detroit Free Press article
Josh Pasek, Associate Professor in the Departments of Communication and Media and Political Science and Associate Director of the Michigan Institute for Data Science, was recently quoted in an article published by Detroit Free Press. The article, titled "Michigan Democrats falsely say GM idled EV factory due to Trump's executive order," includes a discussion of the changing political communication landscape— namely, that fact-checking may be falling by the wayside in favor of political messaging.
Pasek is quoted, "There is increasingly a perception among Democrats that if fact-checking doesn’t matter for the right, why should it matter for the left?" He also explains that “[i]f one side starts using banned weapons, the side that’s not using that is hobbled.”
In regard to the Michigan Democratic Party's false statement, he says, “It is important to have common norms of accuracy. This is a case of being really sloppy with the truth, but one that represents a problematic — and growing — societal trend.”
