Piazza is a discussion tool designed for Q&A. Each top-level post submitted is treated as a question, and can be tagged for searchability and organization. Instructors can set questions to be answerable by students, as well as instructors and GSIs, and can mark a student response as correct/endorsed with one click. Any comment by students can be marked as a follow-up question. Piazza post editor includes LaTeX support and video support, to make answering questions easier.
Piazza’s features make it ideal for a course Q&A, a single place for students to submit questions, and even provide answers, about course content.
Piazza can also be used for less structured course discussion, especially if you find your students responding well to the idea of answering questions collaboratively.
If the instructor, rather than the students, posts questions, students can post both follow-up questions and possible answers, and build a collaborative study guide.
If this is your first time using Piazza, you may want to take a look at Piazza’s tutorial videos, and their documentation.
Piazza can be enabled by any instructor, in your Canvas Course navigation. You can also add it as an Assignment with External Tool type submission, or as a new Module item of the External Tool type. Follow these instructions for setting up Piazza in Canvas.
If you’d like assistance planning how best to use Piazza in your course, please feel free to request a consultation with the LSA Learning and Teaching Consultants.
Technical issues with Piazza should be sent directly to team@piazza.com or 800-818-4124.
