LockDown Browser is sunsetting December 31, 2024 and will no longer be supported after that date.
Looking for an alternative option for secure test-taking? Top Hat provides lockdown test security and greatly improved question-bank management tools for LSA instructors who need those features.
The Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom web-browser that can help secure test-taking.
Please note that the LockDown Browser only locks the single computer or device a student uses to access the Quiz. This is intended for proctored, in-person tests, where a proctor can ensure students are not using a second device to access additional information or websites.
The LockDown Browser is not enabled by default. You must submit a request to have it added to your Canvas course.
Remember that students will need to download and install the LockDown Browser on their computer or device. If they do this at the start of a test, it often causes delays and cuts into necessary test-taking time. For that reason, instructors need to schedule a practice-test using LockDown Browser before hand and remind students to not delete the browser afterwards.
Install Directions for the LockDown Browser
If you need help with LockDown Browser request a consultation with the LSA Learning and Teaching Consultants.
If you experience technical issues with the LockDown Browser, you can submit a request for help to Respondus.
If you have external students added to your course who are using gmail.com addresses instead of umich.edu, they may have trouble logging in due to Google's security protocols. If you have such students, please be prepared with a paper copy of the test, in case of such issues.
