ActiveClass is a discussion tool that provides a single stream of posts and replies, similar to social media platforms. Students can share links, images, and videos in their posts, as well as creating on-the-spot Zoom meetings to expand the discussion. The post interface is very simple to use, which lowers the entry barrier to student participation. Because ActiveClass updates in real-time, it can also be used as a chat tool.
Multiple discussion boards can be created as assignments, and a whole-class, ungraded board can be activated as a top-level item in the course menu. Graded boards have many useful features, including multiple due-dates.
The ActiveFeed ungraded board can provide an easy-to-use social media style interaction space for a course. Unlike public and commercial social media sites, this space will be private to each course, and will not collect or sell student data.
The ActiveAssigment graded boards provide spaces for class discussion. They can have multiple due dates, specific requirements for interaction, and auto-grading if desired.
Because ActiveClass boards update in real-time without having to reload the page, it can be used as a chat tool. This is especially useful for Q&A or student responses during lectures and class presentations. Chat can be in multiple boards, or can use the ActiveFeed top-level board each time.
ActiveClass is available to all LSA courses. Boards can be added as Canvas assignments that use External Tool as the submission type. An ungraded, top level board can also be activated in course Navigation by enabling “ActiveClass” or dragging that item into the enabled set of navigation items.
If you’d like to discuss how best to use the various ActiveClass options in your course, you can make an appointment with a Learning and Teaching Consultant. We are always happy to help!
