R and the R-Commander interface are free, open source software, commonly used for creating graphs and conducting statistical tests. R Studio and R-Commander have versions for both Mac and Windows operating systems.
R-Commander provides a graphic user interface that beginners can use to manipulate data in an R environment without having to know the R programming language.
R Studio allows students who have learned the R programming language to manipulate data directly and learn this industry-standard tool.
R and the R Studio, an integrated development environment for R, and are available at computing sites around campus. For a map of computing sites, see the ITS Website.
The R package is also available for download onto student’s computers. Visit r-project.org to download R. Once R is installed, R-Commander can be installed from inside the R environment. BlueCorps can assist with troubleshooting if students encounter installation issues; you can request assistance from BlueCorps here.
If you’d like to discuss how best to use R activities in your courses, please feel free to request a consultation with the LSA Learning and Teaching Consultants.
Please note that Technology Services has no specialists in the R programming language or environment itself.
