Since 2008, UMMAA curator John O'Shea and his team have been doing underwater archaeological research at the bottom of Lake Huron, near Alpena, Michigan, which would have been dry land between 8,000 and 11,000 years ago. They have found 12 archaeological sites, including ancient caribou hunting blinds, camps, and caches, and identified dozens more that need further investigation. Along the way, the research project has involved volunteers, students, teachers, and others in the local community.
