Soren Frykholm, archaeology PhD student at U-M, is lead author of an article in Latin American Antiquity on recent excavations at the site of Monte Negro on Oaxaca, Mexico. The authors discuss the first complete map of the site, along with new AMS dates and the discovery of two nearby sites. The article, "New Research at Monte Negro," is open access. Read it on the Latin American Antiquity site.
The photo shows previously unrecorded walls near Monte Negro, possibly dating to the Late Postclassic. Wall 1 (top) and Wall 2 (bottom) are shown after the removal of moss from the hewn limestone blocks. The “curtain wall” is out of view in the upper right-hand corner. Congratulations, Soren!
