Within the Philippine Collections at the University of Michigan is a traditional, handwoven Bontoc basket, stained dark, that looks like it could be a hundred years old. In fact, it was made only a few years ago. The basket was crafted by expert Bontoc basket weaver Johnny Bangao Jr., using traditional materials and tools, including bamboo and rattan that he gathered from his farm in the Philippines.

Read more about the traditional methods and tools used to make this basket, which Johnny generously donated to UMMAA during his visit as part of the ReConnect/ ReCollect Project in 2023.
