The UMMAA Brown Bag Lecture Series is pleased to present a lecture by Laura Bossio, assistant professor of Great Lakes archaeology at Central Michigan University. Her lecture, "Revisiting the Indian Hills Site: A Protohistoric Village Community of Western Ciinkwhtanwi Kihcikami (Lake Erie)," will be held on Friday, October 31, 12-1 p.m. in Room 1322 in the School of Education Building. The Indian Hills site (33-WO-4), in Rossford, Ohio, is a large (10-acre), multicomponent site situated at a high promontory along a creek one mile southeast of Taawaawa Siipiiwi (the Maumee River). This site was discovered in 1962, and professional excavations took place in the late 1960s and the early 1980s. A comprehensive review of excavations and artifact analyses exist primarily in two master’s theses. Here, I will review excavation data, ceramics data, and radiocarbon dates, presenting new analyses on abandoned petrographic data collected decades ago. This site, on city property, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979; it is in the process of becoming a “green space,” an urban forest with walking trails. Possible paths forward for collaborative research and local community awareness and engagement will be discussed.
