Canvas has made several significant updates to the Gradebook, including how grades can be hidden, how to set blank grades to 0, and how to set late policies. For a full account of the new features, visit the Canvas Guide on the New Gradebook.

How to Hide or Mute Grades
Canvas has changed how grades can be hidden and posted. In order to hide or mute grades, click the Settings gear icon at the top right of the Gradebook and select the “Grade Posting Policy” tab at the top of the dialog box. This tab will let you select either “Automatically Post Grades”, to post immediately upon grading, or “Manually Post Grades”, to post at a time of your choosing.
A manual, or muted, setting will be indicated by the “Manual” label at the top of the assignment column.
Once you have started grading, a transparent eye with a line through it will also appear, to indicate you have grades that are not yet released.
After you post the grades, the eye icon will disappear, indicating students can now see the grades, though the “Manual” label will remain, to show that the Manually Post Grades setting is still in place on your Gradebook.
If you have questions about these changes you can contact LSA’s Learning and Teaching Technology Consultants at LSATechnologyServices@umich.edu, or ITS’s Teaching & Learning team via 4HELP@umich.edu.
