The relevance of mass function of young star clusters for the study of star formation is well known. Present day observational limitations in determining the slope of the mass function shall be described. The present day mass function of young star clusters can be considered as the Initial mass function (IMF). The question of universality of IMFs shall be investigated using young star clusters formed in different star-forming environments and observed with both ground and space based telescopes.
