Semiconducting nanowires form versatile building blocks with tunable properties, opening up many exciting opportunities in nanoscience and nanotechnology. In this talk, I will present an overview of our efforts in developing functional nanowires for electronics and nanobiotechnology applications. Ge/Si core/shell nanwires with doped Si shells and InSb nanowires as new electronic materials will be discussed. The non-linear optical imaging studies on silicon nanowires and a new group of silicon-gold core-shell nanowires will be covered. With the advantages of highly controllable dimensions, versatile surface chemistry and intensive intrinsic non-linear optical signals, nanowires provide an exciting nano-bio system for investigating the cellular interaction with one-dimension nanomaterials. I will give an example in which we visualized the interaction between the folate and amine group functionalized SiNWs and cells by monitoring the cellular uptake and intracellular distribution of SiNWs in real time.
