Career Mentorship

There’s no doubt about it: Mentorship is oftentimes a key component to a professional’s success. Forming meaningful relationships with a mentor can help you accomplish the bigger things like developing and pursuing individualized goals, fostering your interests, building social capital, and broadening your network. Mentors also help with the day-to-day things like resume critiques, mock interviews, and a sharing of role and industry knowledge.

LSA mentors have stepped up to the plate and are eager to provide LSA students like yourself hard-earned professional advice that will open you up to explore new career possibilities. A recent study indicates that 64% of students who have had a mentor feel extremely certain about their post-graduation goals.

Here at the Hub, we offer two types of mentorship opportunities: flash mentorship through LSA Connect and deeper mentorship through the LSA Mentorship Program.

Quick, on-the-spot mentoring, or what we call flash mentorship, is available to you on LSA Connect, an online mentoring and networking platform designed exclusively for U-M LSA students and alums. This global community of LSA students and alums who were once in your shows creates space for authentic connections, whether that’s through one-on-one instant messaging chats or through the video and phone calling that’s built into the platform.

Are you interested in conducting an informational interview with an expert in your desired field of study? Or are you learning more about a specific place of employment? Perhaps you want to connect with an LSA alum who has your dream job to learn about the steps they took to secure that role? All these career conversations can be had on LSA Connect, whenever and wherever you are.

If you’re looking to expand your professional skills, specifically your networking skills, the LSA Mentorship Program may be right for you. This program is designed to provide students with structured, one-on-one mentorship from seasoned professionals and LSA alums across a spectrum of industries.

Mentors volunteer their time to share their unique experiences, insights, and learnings that students can apply to their own lives, This program is all about building your confidence in networking and learning how to cultivate relationships.

What are some of the benefits of participating? The program is designed to help alleviate some of the biggest barriers students have experienced historically while accessing U-M’s vast alum network.

  • Finding the time — the program provides structured events and deadlines for accountability.
  • Finding the ‘right’ alum to connect with — the program uses your interest form to create a one-on-one match for the academic year based on your preferences.
  • Knowing what to say —throughout the program, you will have both required training and access to helpful resources that can guide you through developing your networking and relationship-building skills.

This year’s LSA Mentorship Program will take place from October 2022 to March 2023, and matches will meet at least five times over the course of the program.

Applications for this year's program has closed and will open up once more next year.
