My research focuses on applying mathematical modeling techniques to further our understandingof the brain. I use modeling at different spatial and temporal scales of brain function, fromsingle neurons, to large scale neuronal network models, to population network models ofdifferent brain areas. The consistent theme of my research is to utilize mathematical modeling tounderstand the physiological mechanisms generating experimentally observed neural activity, inorder to provide the neuroscience community with theoretical frameworks for rigorous,quantitative investigation of experimental hypotheses and for development of experimentallytestablepredictions. Current projects focus on understanding the neural control of sleep andwake states, and investigating dynamic neuromodulation of hippocampal and cortical network activity underlying learning and memory. The mathematical techniques I use are differential equations, nonlinear dynamics and numerical simulations.
