The Actuarial Accelerated Master's Degree Program (AMDP) is intended for highly motivated undergraduate mathematics students who are interested in earning their Bachelor's degree and an Actuarial Mathematics MS in five years.
In order to apply, students must currently:
- Be enrolled at the University of Michigan for a Bachelor's degree
- Have a declared Mathematics Major that is NOT Actuarial Mathematics
- Have a GPA of 3.2 or higher
Before applying, we strongly recommend that students get approval from their current primary mathematics faculty advisor.
Students do not enroll in the Rackham Graduate School until their fifth year of study, and must have completed or be within 6 credit hours of completing the undergraduate degree by the end of their senior year. Students normally apply to graduate with their undergraduate degree at the end of the semester in which their degree requirements are met.
During the student’s senior year, they will have to submit an AMDP Rackham Year application to Rackham Graduate School. Students will need to complete this step to be formally enrolled in the Rackham Graduate School, and enter their Rackham year of study. Deadline: December 15.
During their fifth year of study, students must enroll in and complete two full terms (with 9 or more credits each term) as a Rackham Graduate student for the Master’s degree. AMDP students must pay Rackham fees for all classes taken during the two terms when they are classified as graduate students.
Application Process
Students will typically apply for the program in the second semester of their junior year. Applications are due March 15. Following submission, the Masthematics MS Admissions Committee will review the application.
Required documents include:
- LSA Application Form
- At least one letter of support from a course instructor
- An academic statement of purpose, explaining the reason for interest in the Acturaial Mathematics Master's Program
- A plan for the course of study to complete their undergraduate and Master's degrees
- A current undergraduate transcript
Note: The GRE is not required.
Proram Requirements
We require students to complete the following courses by the end of their senior year:
- Math 424: Compound Interest and Life Insurance (This course will not count towards the Master’s degree, but it is an acceptable elective for the UG Math degree. We require Math 424 because it is an enforced prerequisite for Math 520, which is taught only in the fall.)
- Stats 426: Introduction to Theoretical Statistics (This course can count towards either the UG or the Master’s degree, but not both.)
Course requirements include at least 8 courses for a total of 24 credit hours for the Master’s degree.
Students must take both of the following two-semester sequences:
- Math 520-521(Life Contingencies I-II)
- Math 523-524 (Loss Models I-II)
Further, students must take at least two advanced Mathematics or Statistics courses, such as
- Math 525-526 (Probability Theory, and Discrete-State Stochastic Processes)
- Math 573-574 (Financial Mathematics I-II)
- Stats 500-531 (Regression Analysis, and Modeling and Analysis of Time Series Data)
Finally, students must two courses at the graduate level, such as
- Math 423, 472, 474, 506, 525, 526, 528, 561, 562, 573, 574, 623
- Data Sci 415
- Stats 413, 426, 500, 503, 509, 531
The following is a sample program of study for years four and five:
| Fall (Year 4) | Winter (Year 4) | Fall (Year 5) | Winter (Year 5) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Math 525* | Math 526* | Math 520 (required) | Math 521 (required) |
| Math 424 (UG only) | Stats 426* | Math 523 (required) | Math 524 (required) |
| Math 528 (elective) | Elective |
* The asterisked courses may be used for the Master's if they are not counted towards the UG degree.
