The information below is for high school students and high school graduates who have not yet attended a college or university, who are applying as first-year LSA students. Transfer students should visit the Transfer Student Center website to see their requirements and deadlines.
Students may also consider the Residential College (RC), a four-year academic program within LSA that combines the resources of a large research university with the benefits of a small, inclusive learning community. RC students enjoy small, discussion-based classes and close faculty mentorship alongside an emphasis on the arts, languages, social justice, and community engagement. All RC students are also part of LSA, and the program welcomes students from all academic backgrounds and interests.
Each year, the RC enrolls approximately 250 first-year students. Admission to the RC is confirmed after admission to LSA. To be considered for the RC, please select LSA Residential College on the Common Application under “Program of Study.”
Scholarships
To be considered for an LSA scholarship, we kindly ask that you complete a scholarship application. Please note that scholarship awards are limited, as our funding is made possible through the generosity of donors. While we truly wish we could support every student, completing an application does not guarantee an award.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for admission into LSA, you should complete these classes by the end of your senior year in high school:
- Four years of English
- Three years of biological and physical sciences (Students are encouraged to complete at least two laboratory science classes)
- Three years of mathematics
- Three years of history and/or social science
- Two years of the same foreign language
- Three years of other academic subjects
Application Instructions
Visit the U-M Undergraduate Admissions Application Changes page for current information on the process, requirements, and FAQs.
Submit a completed Common Application, which requires the following:
- The Common Application
- University of Michigan Questions (Pick an area of interest from the list of majors)
- $75 application fee or fee waiver request (See note on Fee Waivers below)
- High school transcript (additional requirements by country)
- School Report (Common App) or Counselor Recommendation (Coalition App)
- One Teacher Evaluation
- SAT or ACT score, if available and you wish them to be considered, or other test results like AP or IB, if available. We will allow for self-reported test scores for the 2026 season; the scores do not need to come from the testing agency. If you have not yet had your scores reported, you can have them sent to us using these links or via Enrollment Connect:
- ACT (U-M code is 2062)
- SAT (U-M code is 1839)
- Note: For the 2026 application cycle, U-M will be test optional. Prospective students will have the choice to submit standardized test scores (ACT/SAT), if they desire, as part of their application, but will not be penalized for not doing so. Advancement Placement (AP) scores, International Baccalaureate (IB) grades, and predicted results or other international credentials will be considered in context with the academic record, regardless of whether or not test optional is chosen. For additional information, please view the "Testing" section on the Application Changes webpage.
- ACT (U-M code is 2062)
- TOEFL, MELAB, or IELTS scores (for non-native speakers of English)
- Official college transcripts (for high school students dual-enrolled in a college or university; additional requirements by country)
If you enrolled in college study after secondary school graduation, you must apply as a transfer student.
Selection into the computer science major
Due to capacity constraints, students must first be selected for the CS major before they can declare the major.
Interested in Business?
First-year applicants can apply to LSA or the Ross School of Business. If you’re interested in a business career, both provide a liberal arts foundation and (optionally for LSA students) a foundation in business. LSA provides a broad, flexible curriculum that gives you ample opportunity to explore your interests (and find new ones!), emphasizing knowledge and skills that prepare you to thrive in business. LSA students can take classes at Ross, pursue a business minor or dual degree, or pursue an advanced degree later, giving you the best of both worlds.

Fee Waivers
You may apply for a fee waiver in the application if you meet certain criteria. Visit Enrollment Connect to view your application fee waiver status if you have already submitted your application. International students are not eligible for fee waivers. In addition to the Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver granted by the state, the University of Michigan will waive all Common Application or Coalition Application filing fees for students who qualify as tribal-enrolled American Indian or Alaska Native applicants (Tribal Enrollment Number required). Applicants should check "Other Fee Waiver Request" and "American Indian or Alaska Native Tribal Enrollee" in the U-M specific portion of the application.
Application fee waivers may be available for applicants who are unable to pay the $75 application fee or who meet certain criteria noted below.
- Native American applicants who are enrolled citizens of a U.S. Federally Recognized Tribe as certified by their Tribal Enrollment Department will have their application fee waived. Applicants should check the fee waiver request box on the application and include the required Tribal Enrollment Number.
- Veterans, either currently serving or those who have previously served, will indicate on the application that they have served or are serving in the United States Armed Forces, and they will automatically be granted an application fee waiver.
