About The LSA First-Gen Commitment

The First-Generation Commitment is a new initiative created by the College of LSA that is focused on enhancing the academic and social experiences of First-Generation and limited-income students in the liberal arts and sciences at U-M.

Mission

Through an asset-based framework, the mission of the First-Generation Commitment is to foster the holistic student success of First-Gen and limited-income students within the College of LSA at the University of Michigan.

Goals

The First-Generation Commitment has three goals. We connect First-Gen and/or limited income students to:

People

We help them develop a positive sense of belonging and build up their social capital. We support students by immediately linking them with a supportive community that partners with them to identify and build upon their strengths.

Places

We help students efficiently navigate campus resources and strengthen their ability to find and use the support they need. By guiding them through their transition to campus and introducing them to the most helpful resources and offices, we ensure they have the tools to succeed.

Preparation

We help students leverage their experiences to access greater opportunities. By providing innovative and proactive career exploration support, we empower students to build on their unique backgrounds and achieve their professional goals.
