The LSA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Office officially launched the first iteration of the LSA Staff DEI Certificate Program entitled: “Strategic Communication for Achieving DEI Objectives” in Fall 2024.
After robust planning and multiple rounds of feedback, the program was piloted during Summer 2024 with a cohort of 12 LSA staff from 10 units. After reviewing the data from the pilot, the program debuted in October 2024.
The inaugural cohort for the program consisted of 19 LSA staff members across 18 units in LSA with advanced DEI knowledge and expertise. Throughout the program, staff engaged with evidence-based, interdisciplinary strategies to promote initiatives related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in their area; practiced maintaining psychological safety during difficult conversations about DEI-related issues; and made valuable connections to collaborate on DEIA objectives within their respective departments.
The LSA Staff DEI Certificate Program was initiated in response to LSA staff focus-groups’ requests for skills-based training opportunities for current DEI practitioners who want to take their learning “to the next level.” Given that staff hold the unique and critical position of maintaining the daily operations and communications between all constituents on campus, DEI competency among staff is essential for maintaining excellence in our campus climate, policies, and practices.
The certificate program will occur annually and is open to LSA staff who strive to highlight DEI goals while centering culturally competent and wellness-based communication strategies.
