Lawyer, Class of '73
What do you do for a living and what’s it like?
Attorney. I am a trial lawyer specializing in admiralty law and practicing in New Orleans, Louisiana. I've been in practice for over thirty years.
Who were some of your favorite professors/classes and why?
Professor William A. Coles. I took his Romantic Poetry proseminar and also and a upper level graduate seminar on Nineteenth Century British literature. He also served on my doctoral committee. He was brilliant and always thought provoking, and his class not only assessed the literature of the period but the overall culture as well, including, e.g., architecture, politics, art, landscaping, religion.
What literature from your English classes shaped you?
All of it, from Beowulf to Mailer. Of course, Dickens was instrumental in shaping my eventual professional life as a lawyer.
What are some of your favorite memories from Michigan?
Life overall in Ann Arbor. I met my wife of 40 plus years in the Romantic Poetry proseminar and was married two years later at St. Mary's Chapel on campus. The good memories are abundant, from the collegiality of my fellow graduate students and the English faculty, playing on the English Department softball team, attending concerts and sporting events, the Art Fair during the Summer, Casa Dominick's, Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burger, the Blind Pig, Pizza Bobs, the Maison Edwards pipe shop in Nichols Arcade, the bookstores, more recently Dawn Treader.
