Lisa Nevett

Lisa Nevett is a classical archaeologist with interests in method and theory in classical archaeology and in using the material culture of the Greek and Roman worlds as a source for social history. Much of her research has focused on domestic architecture, using the construction, decoration and articulation of space within houses to shed light on broader social questions. These include the development of the Greek city, relationships between men and women within Greek and Roman households, and patterns of interaction between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples at the fringes of the Greek and Roman worlds. Recently she has become interested in how the civic and religious spaces of classical Greek cities can be used to explore social relationships and issues of identity.  She is co-director of the Olynthos Project, a multi-disciplinary archaeological project focused on the Classical city of Olynthos in northern Greece, which was in the field from 2014 to 2019 and is now being written up for publication. She is also co-director of the Pella Urban Dynamics Project, an archaeological investigation of the ancient city of Pella (also in northern Greece) which was launched in 2021 in collaboration with colleagues from Michigan and the Greek Archaeological Service.  She has previously been involved in survey and excavation projects in Greece, Turkey, Libya and Britain.
