Transfer Credit Policies & Procedures

UM Students & Prospective Transfer Students

To request evaluation or re-evaluation for any Chemistry course (s), please complete our transfer credit form.

Before you begin: The Department of Chemistry has transfer agreements with some Michigan institutions.  Check the Transfer Equivalency Database to determine whether or not an agreement is in place. Students must achieve a "C" or better to receive transfer credit on their U-M transcript.

  • If the class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as equivalent credit (i.e. Chem 130) then no additional steps are required.
  • If the class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as departmental credit (i.e. Chem Dept.) then the course has been reviewed and was not found to be an exact equivalent to any of our courses at UM. These classes will not count toward the requirements for the major or minor within the Chemistry department but will count toward the LSA natural science area distribution requirement.
  • If the class is not listed on the TCE website, then we have not reviewed the course.

Note that 300- and 400-level courses are not evaluated for equivalent credit.  The University of Michigan upper-level courses are most representative of the research specialties of the U-M chemistry faculty and are seen as “uniquely Michigan” and crucial to a U-M departmental experience.  If you have questions about how the departmental credit for an upper-level may fit into your major plan, please contact your major advisor.

The Basic Rules for Transfer Credit can be found HERE. Please contact the College of LSA if you have questions regarding their transfer guidelines.

Self-Assessment Request:

If you take a course equivalent to one of the lecture courses (CHEM 130, 210, 215, or 230) and would like to self-assess your preparation for the next chemistry course in your sequence, you can contact (chemundergrad@umich.edu) after you have completed the course.

We can provide you with access to a voluntary self-assessment exam, that is comparable to the final exam in our equivalent course, so you can determine the extent to which you have mastered the material you need for the next class. You can then use this information to decide whether you wish to proceed to the next course, or if you would be better served re-taking the UM version of the course you transferred.

If you are a student who has recently transferred to the University of Michigan, and intend to take Chemistry courses such as Chem 130, 210, or, 215, read this first - it will inform you about what to expect in our classes.
