Language Lunch Tables

A Language Lunch Table is exactly what it sounds like: a regular time when students in an RC language program sit down to eat together and speak only that language. Each language has its own, and they run on a set schedule, some daily, some weekly, often paired with a more relaxed coffee hour. Faculty come too, and so do guests. You do not need to be fluent to join. All levels sit at the same table, and that mix is part of the point.

Sharing a meal has always been how people build community, and every culture carries its own food traditions that bring people together. The lunch tables and coffee hours put that to work in the language you are learning. They give you a low-pressure setting to talk with classmates and faculty outside of class, where the goal is not a grade but simply getting more comfortable using the language, at whatever level you are at.

For RC language students, these gatherings are a required part of the program, not an optional extra, because so much of real fluency is built in casual conversation rather than in the classroom. They are also open to anyone else who wants to come, and guest speakers, artists, and performers turn up regularly.
