Polarized America: Lessons from Sports
The polarization of American politics isn't new (remember the Civil War?), but the ways in which our culture, media, and perceptions of one another have become increasingly siloed is. Despite an increasingly national (and international) culture, it's easy to stay within our own political, social, economic and cultural box. But sports can cut across siloes in unexpected ways (while creating new ones). So what can sports teach us about how to depolarize America -- or, does sports tell us that depolarization is not an option? New York Times podcast host, writer and Very Online sports person Jane Coaston will try to explain.
Jane Coaston is the host of "The Argument." Previously, she was a senior politics reporter at Vox with a focus on conservatism and the GOP. Her work has appeared on MSNBC, CNN, NPR, and in National Review, the Washington Post, the Ringer, and ESPN Magazine, among others. In addition, she is a former resident fellow at the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics. She attended the University of Michigan and lives in Washington, D.C.
