Anthropology

• Museum of Anthrolopogical Archaeology Undergraduate Awards: Provide funding up to $2,000 for undergraduate students seeking to participate in a field or research opportunity related to anthropological archaeology. Priority given to Anthropology majors/minors who have not previously received Museum of Anthropological Archaeology awards or scholarships.
• Riggs Hoenecke Undergraduate Experience Prizes: Provides funding for anthropology majors and minors, and any students with an interest in anthropology, to learn outside the classroom through internships, study abroad programs with an experiential component, field schools, and undergraduate research. The prizes are awarded on a competitive basis. First-Year Prize $1,000; Sophomore Prize $2,000; Junior Prize $3,000.

Biology

• Elliott-Wedgewood International Studies Scholarship: Supports research and related overseas travel for Biology students conducting research abroad in a structured (U-M or other) program. Preference given to students with financial need. Scholarship amounts vary based on need and availability. 

Classical Studies

• Carrie Arbour Scholarship: Assists "worthy and needy students" in Classical Studies who could not otherwise afford study abroad. Students in all departmental concentrations are eligible.
• Classical Studies Undergraduate Travel Awards: Assists declared Classical Studies students for travel abroad related to their course of study. Inquire with undergraduate program coordinator.

Cognitive Science

• Weinberg Cognitive Science Study Abroad Award: Provides up to $1,000 to CogSci majors participating in a credit-bearing international experience. Must be taking at least one CogSci course abroad and must demonstrate financial need.

Comprehensive Studies Program

• CSP Opportunity Grant: Provides up to $600 of support for travel expenses for students pursuing off-campus study.

Germanic Languages and Literatures

• Arati Sharangpani Memorial Award: German majors participating in U-M's Tübingen University program during winter term will receive up to $1,000 in funding towards the cost of their flight overseas. Additional scholarships up to $2,500 may be available, based on financial need and/or merit. Those who receive Baden-Württemberg scholarships are excluded from receiving Sharangpani Memorial awards.
• Valentine C. Hubbs Memorial Scholarship: Students participating in U-M's Academic Year in Freiburg program will receive $1,000 in funding. Additional scholarships up to $3,000 may be available, based on financial need and/or merit. Those who receive Baden-Württemberg scholarships are excluded from receiving Hubbs Memorial awards.
• Sturm Family Immersive Study Abroad Scholarship: Funds the program fee, lodging expenses, and a flat stipend to cover living expenses for one student per year participating in the Academic Year in Freiburg program.
• Mechthild Medzihradsky Scholarship: Provides awards of $100-1,000 to undergraduates doing summer internships in German-speaking countries. More will be awarded to students who have unpaid internships and to students who are German majors and minors. 
• Sturm Scholarship Award: For undergraduate and graduate students traveling to a German-speaking country for an overseas experience. Students who enroll in a German language course at a Goethe Institut will receive a $250-$1,500 scholarship. Scholarship amounts are determined based on the student's status as a German major or minor and the length of time the student will be studying at a Goethe Institut.

Honors Program

• Benedek London Scholarship: Supports LSA Honors students who plan to study abroad at the London School of Economics or another London-area university.
• Catalyst Grants | First- and Second-Year Students: Provide support for research, civic, and/or leadership development experiences that involve serious engagement with diversity, equity, inclusion, or social justice issues. Awards range from $500-$1,000. Honors grant funding cannot be used to pay U-M tuition, including CGIS program fees, but travel funding in support of CGIS trips is eligible. 
• Honors Grants for Research, Travel, and Special Projects: Support thesis-related research, research-related travel, and international travel. Honors grant funding cannot be used to pay U-M tuition, including CGIS program fees, but travel funding in support of CGIS trips is eligible.  
• Samo Alajbegović Fellowship - Funding for summer internships in countries bordering the Adriatic Sea:  supports University of Michigan undergraduates in the LSA Honors Program pursuing research and internship opportunities in one of the following fields: marine biology, biology, ecology, anthropology, archaeology, and the humanities. The summer fellowship honors the legacy of Samo, a native of Slovenia, who spent his life studying his beloved Adriatic Sea, which includes Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  

Judaic Studies

• Al and Florence Schwartzberg Scholarship Fund: Supports undergraduate students with funding up to $5,000 for tuition assistance, research projects, internships, study abroad, and similar activities related to Judaic Studies. Primary preference given to students with demonstrated financial need (those receiving loans or grant funds from the Office of Financial Aid). Secondary preference to students with demonstrated academic achievement.
• Stanley Frankel Summer Travel Fellowship: Open to students who have declared a degree in Judaic Studies and have taken at least three Judaic Studies classes. Provides up to $5,000 in support of students traveling to Israel, Europe, or Latin America to pursue theses research in archives or libraries, advanced language training, archaeological excavations, scholarly workshops, or social welfare and cultural reconstruction projects in communities recovering from political oppression and economic crises. Students are also eligible to apply for study abroad funds of up to $7,500 per request.
• Weingast Family Fund: Funding up to $5,000 per request is available to all U-M undergraduate students who are receiving any grant or loan funds through the Office of Financial Aid and are pursuing travel or study abroad in Israel. Preference given to students from LSA who will be studying for semester or year-long programs.
• Declared majors and minors are also eligible to apply for support of educational opportunities related to Judaic Studies up to $2,000 per request.

Middle East Studies

• Hajja Razia Sharif Sheikh Travel and Study Fund: Provides one monetary award annually to an undergraduate student who will pursue research or study abroad in Islamic studies. Open to all undergraduate students in the Department of Middle East Studies in good academic standing. Graduating seniors are not eligible.

Modern Greek

• Foundation for Modern Greek Studies Fellowships for Study in Greece: For modern Greek language study in approved programs in Greece. Fellowships provide funding for transportation, tuition, and other expenses to U-M students of exceptional promise. Fellowships are for summer study. Undergraduates as well as graduate students are eligible.
• Kalliopi Kontou-Filis and Kenneth P. Matthews Fund: Supports student study opportunities in Greece and Cyprus.

Organizational Studies

• OS Study Abroad Scholarship: A competitive award designed to support OS students who have chosen to enhance their skills as global citizens through formal study abroad. Priority is given to programs through which the student will be fully immersed in the host culture and the course content has relevance for the student’s OS goals.
• Provides limited financial assistance for tuition, airfare, or additional living expenses for studying abroad.
• Offered to OS juniors during winter and summer terms.
  

Political Science

• Academic Experience Funding: Provides up to $500 to facilitate academic experiences for Political Science majors/minors beyond the traditional U-M classroom, including conference attendance, internships, research projects, or study abroad.
• Matthew K. Smith Study Abroad Award: Open to all Political Science majors and minors. Up to 6 scholarships of $500 each are awarded every other year. 

Program in the Environment

• PitE Practical Experience Scholarship: Offers both merit-based and need-based scholarships to subsidize costs of field courses, study abroad, and internships. Funds can be used toward transportation costs, program or course fees, room and board associated with the program, and other costs.
• Declared PitE majors or minors (including sustainability minors and food minors) in good academic standing are eligible, unless they have completed a practical experience or have previously received scholarship support for a practical experience. The only exception is for the Abrams Internship Scholarship—students may be considered for internship funding if they have already completed a practical experience.
• Apply the semester before leaving for practical experience. Students must complete an online application. Scholarships are competitive—not everyone who applies will receive funding.

Residential College

• Amy Rose Silverman International Education/Engaged Learning Fund: Supports international travel for an RC student who proposes the most compelling project abroad, clearly related to the student's academic program and taking the student into the world in some meaningful way. The award of $3000 is not given annually, but as student proposals merit consideration.
  
• Donald and June Brown Endowment Fund: Provides $500-2,000 each year to several students with demonstrated financial need. Awards are specifically for study abroad, travel with RC classes, and internships.
• Honeli Fund: The recipient of the Fund is expected to live, spend time, and engage with communities and groups who are socially, economically, and/or politically excluded and marginalized. The recipient is expected to collect material - visual, audio, or any other medium that suits the project - that can then be used to give their lives and concerns a voice in the US and particularly at U-M. In the year following the experience, the recipient is expected to exhibit, screen, and/or install (as is appropriate to the medium) the final production at the RC, and if possible, at other venues on campus and beyond.

Romance Languages and Literatures

All students (domestic and international) can apply to RLL scholarships.

• Beverly Sherman Nash Study Abroad Scholarship: Open to students studying French with RLL and may be used for a spring or summer term study abroad program in France. The scholarship, up to $1,500, is awarded based on academic achievement and strength of application. 
• Canzano Study Abroad Scholarship: Open to declared RLL majors or minors studying Italian, Portuguese, and/or Spanish. Awards up to $1,000 based on academic achievement, strength of application, and financial need. May be used only for summer study abroad programs. Preference given to students studying in Spain, Argentina, Portugal, or Italy.
• Chiara Maria Levin Study Abroad Scholarship: Open to declared RLL majors and minors planning to study abroad in spring or summer who are accepted to a U-M study abroad program. The scholarship, up to $500, is awarded based on academic achievement and strength of application. Preference given to students that have studied more than one language at U-M.
• Ernst Pulgram Italian Study Abroad Scholarship: Open to students studying Italian and may be used for fall, winter, spring, summer, or academic year study abroad programs. Applicants do not have to be declared Italian major or minor. The scholarship, up to $1,000, is awatded based on academic achievement and strength of application.
• Lucille Bryant Wilson Study Abroad Scholarship: Open to declared majors and minors in Portuguese, French, Italian, Romance Languages & Literatures, and Spanish who are studying abroad in spring or summer. The scholarship, up to $1,500, may only be used for a U-M study abroad program.
• Suzanne Karpus Study Abroad Scholarship: Open to declared Spanish majors or minors and may be used for a spring or summer term study abroad program. The scholarship, up to $1,500, is awarded based on academic achievement, strength of application, and financial need.
• Vincenti Study Abroad Scholarship: Open to declared majors in French, Italian, Romance Languages and Literatures, and Spanish. Specifically for fall semester, winter semester, or academic year U-M programs (i.e., excludes spring and summer programs).
• Vincenti Summer Study Abroad Scholarship: Open to declared majors in French, Italian, Romance Languages and Literatures, and Spanish. Specifically for spring or summer U-M programs. The scholarship, up to $2,000, is awarded based on academic achievement, strenght of application, and financial need.

International Institute

African Studies Center

• Research and Internship Support in Africa: Provides a limited number of grants up to $3,000 for summer or semester-long research projects or internships at institutions and businesses in Africa. Graduating seniors may not apply for a scholarship to participate in a program following graduation.

Center for Chinese Studies

• LRCCS Undergraduate Study Abroad Scholarship: Provides a limited number of awards to students who will participate in a study abroad program to China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan. Program must be a traditional study abroad program, GCC or GIEU course through CGIS, or a summer intensive Chinese language program. Independent research, internships, service learning projects, and volunteer activities are not eligible. Applicants must be undergraduate students at U-M during period of study abroad. Graduating seniors may not apply for a scholarship to participate in a program following graduation.
• Walter Power Internship Scholarship: Provides funding up to $5,000 for students participating in internships at a reputable government, for-profit, or non-profit organization in China. Applicants must be undergraduate student at U-M during period of study abroad. Graduating seniors may not apply for a scholarship to participate in an internship following graduation.

Center for European Studies

• Summer Research and Internship Grants: Support undergraduate and graduate students in research or internships, intended to promote the study of Europe and European integration. Awards range from $500-$2,000. Graduating students are not eligible.

Center for Japanese Studies

• CJS Undergraduate Study Abroad Scholarship: Provides a limited number of awards to students who will participate in a study abroad program to Japan. Program must be a traditional study abroad program, GCC or GIEU course through CGIS, or a summer intensive Japanese language program. Independent research, internships, service learning projects, and volunteer activities are not eligible. Applicants must be undergraduate students at U-M during period of study abroad. Graduating seniors may not apply for a scholarship to participate in a program following graduation. 
• CJS Undergraduate Internship Scholarship: Provides funding up to $5,000 for students participating in internships at a reputable government, for-profit, or non-profit organization in Japan. Applicants must be undergraduate student at U-M during period of study abroad. Graduating seniors may not apply for a scholarship to participate in an internship following graduation.

Copernicus Center for Polish Studies

• Copernicus Summer Grants and Amelia Kulesa Konopka Fellowships: Support undergraduate and graduate students in research projects or internships in Poland. Awards range from $500-$5,000. Graduating students are not eligible.

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS)

• FLAS Fellowships provide tuition and stipend to students studying designated foreign languages in combination with area studies or international aspects of professional studies. Priority is to encourage study of less-commonly-taught modern languages.
• Administered by U-M Area Studies centers and awarded competitively through annual fellowship competitions.
• Eligible languages: Arabic, Armenian, Bengali, Bosnian, Chinese, Croatian, Filipino, Hebrew, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Nahuatl, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Quechua, Russian, Serbian, Thai, Tibetan, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Uzbek, Vietnamese, Yiddish. Languages listed here are preapproved. Restrictions may apply. Other languages might also be eligible.
• Amount is contingent upon annual US/ED program approval, federal regulations, as well as continued congressional funding.

Fulbright Program

Eligibility:

• Enrolled U-M students must apply through International Institute.
• Applicant must be a US citizen.
• Must have completed undergraduate degree by beginning of award.
• Must demonstrate language skills necessary to complete proposed project.

Nam Center for Korean Studies

• SeAH Haiam Arts and Sciences Scholarship: Supports undergraduate and graduate students by funding research travel, data collection, or fieldwork related to Korean Studies. Maximum funding amount is $2,500.
• Summer in Korea Scholarship: Provides two annual awards to support travel to Korea to attend Yonsei International Summer School. Scholarship recipients must take at least one language course in adition to subject courses. The scholarship covers the application fee, full tuition, dormitory charges, and program fees for YISS and reimburses airfare up to $1,700. 

Program in International and Comparative Studies

• PICS Study Abroad Fellowship: Provides financial assistance to International Studies majors and minors registered for an approved U-M study abroad program, either during the academic year or during the spring and/or summer terms. Funding: $2,000 for full academic year programs; $1,000 for semester programs; $500 for spring or summer term programs.

Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia

• Albania Community Summer Fellowship: Supports summer study, research, or internships in Albania and in neighboring countries preparing to join the European Union. Awards up to $1,000. 
• New Europe Grants: Funding ranging from $1,000-$5,000 to support U-M undergraduate students in summer study, research, or internships in the New Europe — countries that became European Union members in 2004 or later, or are current candidate countries.

Office of Financial Aid Scholarships

The Office of Financial Aid has several study abroad scholarships which they automatically consider students for.

Go Blue, Go Abroad Workshop + Scholarship

Eligibility

• First-year students at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor)
  
• Students must attend all three workshops and complete homework assignments

• $1,000 scholarship towards a future study abroad program

First-Gen Education Abroad Scholarship

Eligibility

• Enrolled U-M Ann Arbor undergraduate student of any major
• First-generation college student, as defined at https://firstgen.umich.edu/
• Plan to participate in a Spring or Summer 2024 education abroad program listed in M-Compass

• 10 $3,000 Scholarships available

Mark and Myra Sorensen International Travel Scholarship

Eligibility

• U-M Ann Arbor students enrolled in a degree program, undergraduate or graduate, regardless of citizenship.
• Rising sophomore or above of good academic standing and returning to campus for at least one semester prior to graduation.
• Duration of international experience must be at least three weeks.
• Preference may be given to students with demonstrated financial need and students traveling abroad for the first time.

Amount

• At least $750, contingent on availability of funds.

Wallenberg International Summer Travel Award

Eligibility

• Undergraduates: Rising juniors or seniors who have completed 2 years of study at U-M by the time of travel and will be enrolled full time for at least 1 more semester at U-M following return to the US. Minimum GPA of 3.0.
• Graduate Students: Must be full-time and in good academic standing, enrolled for at least one semester following return to the US. Must be pursuing a project related to the field of public health and not directly part of the student's current body of research.
• Awards support selected students taking part in a community service project or civic participation anywhere in the world. Projects should be at least 4 weeks in duration and take place outside the US between May and August. 

Amount

• Undergraduate: $2,000; Graduate: $2,500 

Phi Kappa Phi Honors Society Scholarship

Eligibility

• Must attend an institution with active Phi Kappa Phi chapter (you do not need to be a member).
• Must have a 3.75 GPA or higher on 4.0 scale.
• Must have applied to or been accepted into an accredited study abroad program before session deadline.
• Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad.

Amount

• Seventy-five $1,000 grants are awarded annually.

Student Academic Multicultural Initiatives

Eligibility

• Undergraduate or graduate students. SAMI Committee encourages student proposals for projects and activities designed to educate campus community on academic multicultural issues. Funds provided for study abroad experiences only if a significant academic multicultural opportunity has been clearly identified.

Amount

• Maximum award of $1,000 for independent faculty supervised research on a multicultural issue
• Maximum award of $1,000 for presentation of scholarly research on multicultural topics at a national or international conference, 
• Maximum award of $400 for participation in a major national or international academic conference that will make significant contribution to multicultural understanding.

Stamps School of Art and Design International Travel Award and Passport Scholarship

Eligibility

• Stamps undergraduate majors who are participating in a program or independent experience to fulfill their international experience milestone.
• Must complete M-Compass program application before beginning scholarship application. Funding is not available for non-UM sponsored programs.
• Priority given to students with demonstrated financial need, limited international travel experience, and who are enrolled in Stamps-sponsored program.

Amount

• Scholarship award amounts usually range from $1,000-$3,500. 
• Passport scholarships of $175 are available for students with financial need.

Ross School of Business Global Fellowship

Eligibility

• For programs not offered through the Ross Global Program. 
• Must qualify for need-based aid and must be pursuing BBA or Minor in Business at Ross School of Business (Ann Arbor campus only). Undergraduates with preferred admission to BBA program are eligible.
• Eligible students should submit application on M-Compass at the same time they apply for, or after they have been accepted to, an international program. 
• Award decision and amount are determined by application essays, recommendations, academic performance, and financial need.

School of Nursing Global Outreach Scholarship

Eligibility

• Undergraduate or graduate students enrolled at School of Nursing.
• Students may apply for funding to participate in global work, internships, or volunteering with hospitals and clinics (private or public), government agencies, international organizations, or non-governmental organizations. Must remain enrolled through entirety of proposed global activity. 
• Proposal must meet all University Travel Policy and Institutional Review Board requirements.
• Preference given to low- or middle-income destinations in western hemisphere and to activities connected with UMSN curricular initiatives, but students are encouraged to apply for service-learning programs.

School of Public Health: Undergraduate Study Abroad Award

Eligibility 

• Must be enrolled as an undergraduate student in the School of Public Health; newly matriculated sophomores are also eligible to apply. Supplemental studies and graduate students are not eligible.
• Must have completed at least one semester at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor.
• Must be returning to Public Health as an enrolled undergraduate student in the fall term following the study abroad.
• Must be accepted or awaiting acceptance to a spring/summer study abroad program either with the University of Michigan (CGIS programs, etc.) or with a non-University provider. Applicants are required to provide proof of acceptance/application before a funding decision will be granted.
• Must apply for and receive need-based support through the Office of Financial Aid.
• Award decisions are based on the strength of applicant's statement of purpose, academic performance, estimated international program costs, and level of financial need.

School of Public Health: Undergraduate Internship Award

Eligibility 

• Must be enrolled as an undergraduate student in the School of Public Health; newly matriculated sophomores are also eligible to apply. Supplemental studies and graduate students are not eligible.
• Must have completed at least one semester at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor.
• Must be returning to Public Health as an enrolled undergraduate student in the fall term following the internship (students participating in an internship after graduation do not qualify).
• Must be accepted to a spring/summer internship program. Applicants are required to provide proof of acceptance before a funding decision will be granted.
  
• Internship requirements: minimum 6 weeks duration, minimum 25 hours per week
