Spanish 230 in Buenos Aires, Argentina
From the painted buildings of La Boca to the acres of parks in Palermo to the European-influenced architecture of Recoleta, Buenos Aires is full of colorful and diverse neighborhoods. Visit the stunning Teatro Colón, ranked among the best opera houses in the world. Or take a group tango class after exploring the National Museum of Fine Arts and enjoying an arepa. A highlight of this program is the ferry ride and overnight excursion to Colonia, Uruguay, one of the oldest cities in the region.
Spanish 230 in San José, Costa Rica
Chepe—as locals affectionately call the capital city of San José—gently blends Costa Rica’s indigenous traditions, colonial history, and contemporary status as a vital champion of the environment. In the city’s historic neighborhoods, colonial mansions have been converted into modern art galleries, international restaurants, and boutique hotels. The excursions on this program take advantage of the beautiful natural resources around San José and keep you speaking Spanish outside the classroom. Explore the crater and surrounding waterfalls of Poas Volcano National Park, learn from local farmers on a banana plantation and a fair trade coffee cooperative, and hike through the rain forest to meet an artist who makes paper mache masks.
AsianLan 203 in Nanjing, China
Nanjing, situated by the legendary Qinhuai River, served as the national capital for several dynasties throughout Chinese history. The city features a vast array of historical treasures from the Three Kingdoms Period and the Ming Dynasty, as well as all the opportunities offered by a vibrant, prosperous, modern metropolis. See, touch, and discuss China’s political, cultural, and economic transformation as you learn Mandarin. The program includes a trip to Shanghai and an excursion to Mt. Mogan. In Nanjing, live with host families, visit elementary schools and historic sites, and enjoy the annual Dragon Boat Festival.
French 230 in Grenoble, France
Grenoble was the site of the early uprisings of the French Revolution in 1788 and is rich in art and culture, offering a variety of cultural attractions like cinemas, concerts, theatres, and museums. Throughout your time there, UM faculty and on-site staff organize course-related activities to complement your classroom learning. Previous groups have visited local schools to meet and interact with French students, learned to play pétanque at a local sporting club, and experienced French cuisine through a cooking class. Day trips are also offered to the group—past trips have taken students to Lyon, Chartreuse, Annecy, and Avignon.
Ferrara is a renaissance city in northeastern Italy midway between Venice and Florence. A smaller city relatively unknown to tourists, it provides an ideal setting for Italian language immersion. The Italian 230 program is full of activities that complement classroom learning and allow you to experience Italian culture. Examples include guided tours, group dinners, pasta making, local festivals and parades, and day trips to Tuscany and Venice.
Granada is known for its unique historic, artistic, and cultural heritage. Some of its most important attractions include the Alhambra Palace and the gardens at the Palacio de Generalife. Surrounded by the Alpujarras mountain range and only 2 hours from the coast, the relaxed lifestyle of this small, urban environment makes Granada the perfect place to live and study for 6 weeks. Complement your coursework with several afternoon and weekend excursions and optional cultural activities to help you learn more about Spanish culture. Spend an afternoon hiking in the Alpujarras mountains or a day visiting the historical mosque in Cordoba. Meet with friends in the afternoons after siesta to do homework and have some delicious churros y chocolate.
