Get a peek into Isabelle's recommended do and don'ts for studying abroad at SFS Panama: Tropical Island Biodiversity Studies!
Don't Forget To Pack: Light pants! Its easy to forget pants since its going to be so hot, however its really nice to have a pair of light flowy pants to get out of the sun during the day or escape the bugs at night.
Best Left At Home: Knee high socks are specifically on the program packing list, but you will never use them. Normal wool hiking socks are fine!
Best Eats in the Area: Bocas Sandwich shop. Great food, outdoor seating, and after rice, beans, and chicken for every meal you will be dying for a sandwich!
Favorite Local Activity: Scuba diving! Bocas del Toro is GREAT for beginner divers. You can get certified at a discount and dive in amazing, warm water with tons of cool species.
Where to Study: Our campus has incredible, cozy, outdoor study spots with beautiful rainforest views.
Must-Try Local Dish: Hojaldres. They are Panamanian fried bread frequently eaten at breakfast. They were a fan favorite!
Best Photo Op: Bluffs beach. Bluffs features empty beaches, gorgeous waves, white sand, and even turtle nests during the right time of year.
Your Biggest Fail: I only brought 2 swimsuits to a marine biology program. Make sure you bring a variety of swim wear, rash guards, and suits fit for both fieldwork and fun!
Buy This: Hostels for weekends away! Spending the money to stay off campus on the weekends away is completely worth it. It allows you to see more of the unique cultures and ecosystems of Panama.
Not That: Starfish beach is a super touristy area and is often crowded. There are much better beaches nearby with plenty of opportunities to see starfish.
Most Interesting Class: Environmental Governance, Development, and Conservation. The class was super different from anything I had taken before, which was really cool.
Best Part of the Program: Fieldwork! We took a ton of field trips and did a month long field research project, which was awesome.
Unforgettable Weekend Trips: Boquete! Taking a trip to Panama's mountain region is unforgettable and offers the chance to see a completely new side of Panama.
Bonus Pro Tip/s: Make friends with the taxi drivers, both boat and land. They will be your best friends and saving graces for going out and getting to town.
