In early October, UMMAA collections manager Jim Moss brought a selection of Qing dynasty clothing to campus for history associate professor Pär Cassel's class, History 354: Modern China. These materials were collected by the office of the inspector general of customs in China and sent to the 1884 Cotton Centennial Exposition, which was held in New Orleans. After the exposition closed, the material was gifted to the University of Michigan because of then-U-M president James Angell's previous work in China. The material brings to life, in full color, not only the fashion but the colors and symbolism of Qing-era China embedded in them.
