Where did you transfer from? Henry Ford College
Why did you choose to transfer to the University of Michigan? Especially as an in-state applicant, there really was no other school that was as attractive as the University of Michigan: having the opportunity to earn my bachelor’s degree from one of the most prestigious schools in my field, while also reaping the benefits of a school with such an active student life. There really was no other option in terms of where I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my schooling, and so far it has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Based on your personal experience, what is the one thing you want to tell new transfer students? It will be overwhelming. It will be intimidating. It will be an adjustment. Coming from a community college where my largest class had about 30 students, to sitting in a lecture hall with over 400 students, it is definitely a big change. However, the environment placed around learning, and the commitment the University has made to helping students get as much out of their courses as they can has been extremely helpful. Help and support is available, you just have to ask for it. I would also say to remember that you belong! You got accepted into the University just the same as everyone else who is here -- the imposter syndrome is definitely real, but just always remember that you’ve earned your spot here and you are able to succeed!
How did you make friends and meet other students on campus? Joining clubs and mingling with those in my classes! I cannot emphasize enough how willing other students are to meet new people. This was one of my biggest fears before I stepped foot on campus; however, after attending WinterFest and finding out about a few very fun clubs, I was able to find myself surrounded with a great group of friends and an even better support system.
What is your favorite part about being an LSA transfer student? Being able to take advantage of all the resources and benefits there are in the University. There are so many resources available to us that you almost always have something that you are able to benefit from.
What do you know now that you wished you knew before transferring to the University of Michigan? Just how different it was going to be from my time at HFC. From the large classes to the campus itself, it is a big adjustment to anyone who steps foot here for the first time. It will take some time but once you get your footing and adjust, you will feel right at hoMe.
Why did you choose your specific major(s)? I view Computer Science as a field of teaching me a new way to express my creativity: teaching me how to speak to a computer and have it create what I want it to do. Now that I have taken a few courses it is really cool to see just how the skills we are taught in class can translate into my own personal projects into creating whatever I can imagine.
